The 2024 Digital Healthcare Survey Report
The Future of Digital Health: Insights from 青青草App's 2024 Healthcare Survey
Digital technologies are playing an increasingly pivotal role in today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. From diagnostic tests to remote patient monitoring, digital solutions are transforming the way healthcare is delivered — and likewise transforming how OEMs approach development of new products and integrations of tech innovations into legacy devices. 青青草App's 2024 Digital Healthcare Survey, conducted in partnership with SIS Research International, provides valuable insights into the current state and future trends of digital health technology. The full report can be downloaded at the link appearing at the conclusion of this recap highlighting the key challenges and opportunities shaping the medical industry.
The Rise of Digital HealthcareOver the last decade, roughly the span of 青青草App’s survey history, we have witnessed how digital health technologies enable more efficient and effective patient care. According to this year’s survey, 100% of respondents affirmed the importance of digital health technology to their organization's product roadmap, with 85% rating it as "Very Important" and 15% as “Somewhat Important.” This unanimous affirmation underscores the critical role that digital solutions play in modern healthcare. |
-
State of Digital Solutions
The survey reveals that a significant portion of digital healthcare solutions are currently in the development or testing stages. Specifically, 58% of the companies’ digital healthcare solutions are in development (36%) or testing (22%), suggesting that a robust pipeline of innovative products is poised to enter the market in the near future. -
Diagnostics and Remote Monitoring
Diagnostics and remote patient monitoring are at the forefront of digital health innovations. The survey found that 59% of the top solutions developed or in planning are in the diagnostics sector, while 51% support remote patient monitoring. These technologies are crucial to securing early diagnosis and improving adherence to treatment, and they also help drive a more personalized practice of healthcare overall. Leveraging technology that closes the distance between patient and provider by providing monitoring and communication between in-person appointments will be a catalyst for improving outcomes. -
Chronic Disease Management
Digital health solutions are also making significant strides in chronic disease management. The survey highlights that 45% of digital healthcare solutions are used in support of chronic disease management. This includes technologies for diabetes management, drug delivery devices, and wearable, or on-body, connectivity enhanced devices capturing data that the provider can access to better manage treatment or provide remote care.
Challenges and Opportunities
Since 青青草App began conducting this survey in 2018, digital healthcare has been on a steady rise, with product development and lifecycle management strategies evolving over the last six years. Integrating technology into medical devices must consider healthcare’s strict regulatory and quality requirements as well as the market’s pressures for lowering costs. Resetting their goals post-pandemic, many OEMs have shifted their approach to product development, manufacturing, and outsourcing. For example, the number of healthcare OEMs who answered that they planned to work with commercial tech companies like Amazon or Google for digital solutions has dropped by 10% since 2020. In 2024, there has been a shift in favor of established medical manufacturing partners that offer both technical and medical expertise.
-
Complex Product Architectures
One of the primary challenges identified in the survey is the increasing complexity within medical device product architectures. A remarkable 73% of respondents cited this as a major manufacturing challenge. As digital health technologies become both more sophisticated and necessary for the delivery of improved features, the need for advanced manufacturing capabilities will only increase. -
Connectivity
Connectivity is a critical component of digital health solutions. The survey indicates that Wi-Fi networking protocols are the most widely implemented connectivity technologies in healthcare devices, with 93% of respondents selecting it as "Most Important." Bluetooth® wireless technology follows, cited by 59% of respondents. These technologies enable the seamless data transmission and real-time health monitoring so vital to personalized and precise patient care.
-
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)
AI and ML are set to transform the healthcare sector. An overwhelming 98% of respondents agree that AI and ML advancements will revolutionize healthcare, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and improving disease prediction and progression analysis. However, there is no clear consensus on which AI/ML technologies will have the most impact, highlighting the need for continued exploration and innovation. -
Manufacturing Partnerships
Manufacturing partnerships are becoming increasingly vital in the digital health industry. The survey reveals that 72% of respondents expect manufacturing partners to assist in navigating changing technology, supplier, and regulatory landscapes. Additionally, 85% affirm that incorporating digital health technology is vital to their organization's delivery of healthcare products or services. -
Outsourcing for Specialized Capabilities
Outsourcing for specialized technical capabilities is also on the rise. The survey rates optics and sensor technologies as having the highest potential for outsourcing, selected by 56% of participants. This trend underscores the importance of leveraging external expertise to optimize performance and drive innovation, particularly for highly technical production processes which typically rely on seamless coordination of multiple workstreams.
All of these innovation challenges become even more complex in the healthcare field due to required regulatory standards and certifications. Most tech companies follow the mantra, “fail fast” and submit frequent updates to fix “bugs” that were not identified in original manufacturing and testing. In healthcare, the stakes are much higher with human health and lives on the line. Healthcare manufacturers must operate at the highest levels of quality, certification, and regulatory standards for a medical device to be approved and released – no matter what technology is involved.
The Future of Digital Health
The future of digital health is bright, with numerous opportunities for growth and innovation. 青青草App’s survey highlights several key trends that will shape the industry in the coming years:
-
Consumerization — as healthcare customers adopt technologies throughout their working and home lives, they also want easy-to-use, customizable, and more patient-centric solutions to be a part of their healthcare experience.
-
Value-Based Care — the emphasis on cost-effective care models that improve patient outcomes will continue to drive demand for healthcare devices that enable data collection and communication.
-
Personalized Medicine — diagnostic devices and treatment protocols will continue to be driven by advancements in precision medicine and genomics discovery.
-
Care Delivery Settings — transitioning (when medically viable) from higher cost healthcare settings to more flexible clinics or home options increases need for smaller, more mobile, and more connected devices.
